And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.”

Revelation 21:5

When Finding God in Chaos Feels Impossible

Yesterday morning was one of those mornings when it seemed like nothing was going right. We were running late. My dress wasn’t fitting properly, but I didn’t have another option. My hair wasn’t cooperating. We even got caught by a train that was slowing to a stop rather than moving quickly through the railroad crossing.

It seemed like every detail was going wrong, and for a detail-oriented person like me, that made the morning torture.

All told, after all the delays and an unfortunate mix-up, we ended up being very late. I’d never been that late for a service before, much less an Easter service. Given all the other problems we’d had, a significant part of me was so embarrassed that I wanted to turn around, go home, and stream the service instead. I couldn’t imagine walking in so late, but thankfully God gave me a kind and gentle husband who led me to go in anyway.

When we finally made our way into the sanctuary, we’d missed the entire worship portion of the service and the very beginning of the sermon. We quickly found a seat in the back, and I tried to calm my frazzled nerves enough to take in what the preacher was saying.

What Resurrection Really Means: God’s Attention to Detail

Given the challenges of the morning and my mental state going into the service, it might seem unlikely that I would be receptive enough to take anything meaningful away from the sermon, but somehow God still got through to me.

The preacher was talking about the resurrection to come, in which everyone who has died rises again at the very end. It was an interesting thing to focus on for Easter Sunday, but his point really stood out to me.

In raising the physical bodies of the people who have already died, Jesus would be redeeming everything from sin and death. He would forget nothing. Not even the bodies that have long returned to dust. Jesus is in the business of redeeming it all. Every last inch of creation. Jesus will make all things new.

It’s not a particularly surprising truth. It seems rather obvious that He wouldn’t do things halfway, but the practical example of Jesus erasing all cemeteries from the planet by raising the physical bodies of the dead hit my detail-oriented heart in the feels.

How God’s Attention to Detail Reveals His Character

One of the most vivid ways in which I see and connect to the goodness of God is when I see His attention to detail. The fact that He sees the lives of every sparrow reminds me how tenderly He loves all of His creation. His knowledge of how many hairs I left on my pillow this morning shows me how attentive He is to what’s going on in my life. And the Bible’s assertion that He will erase the cemeteries by raising the dead demonstrates how dedicated He is to wiping away every trace of sin and death.

I am so glad this Easter to be celebrating a Savior who doesn’t do things halfway. He is looking to redeem everything, to make all things new. Every cell. Every atom. When the time comes and Jesus returns to complete His role as Redeemer of creation, nothing will be left out or forgotten. And I am so thankful for a God who cares so deeply about His imperfect creation.
