**Today’s devotion is a sneak peek of a brand new resource that I’ll be dropping soon–a 7-day devotional ebook called Building Intimacy with the Almighty. If you like what you see, keep an eye out on my website or check back here for a link below! I hope it blesses you!

Before reading through today’s devotion, read Psalm 91. As you read, pay attention to what the psalmist says about trust and how he develops his trust in God.

Focal passage: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!” —Psalm 91:1-2

I think, no matter how old a person is, one of the most beautiful and pure sights one can see is a child fast asleep in their daddy’s arms. Head drooped to one side, arms at an odd angle, mouth hanging open with the tiniest rivulet of drool making a stain on daddy’s shirt—doesn’t matter. There’s still something in that image that we long for—trust.

If we get down to it, trust is little more than confidence that we’re safe with someone. We trust someone when we feel like they care enough about us to try not to hurt us. We trust when we believe someone has a strong sense of morality and wants to do what is right. Sometimes we even trust when we have reason to believe that someone dislikes the same group of people that we do. But rarely do we trust in the same way as that drooling, drooping darling on daddy’s shoulder.

That kind of trust is complete—a sort of unworried surrender that bleeds into our actions and results in rest.

We see this kind of trust in Psalm 91.

There’s a peace that permeates this psalm despite the terror, arrows, darkness, and destruction the psalmist is encountering. Instead of the fear that most of us would assume naturally comes in the presence of these dangers, the psalmist expresses utter confidence in verses 7–10. This psalmist knows the character of God so well that he has complete confidence in their relationship.

There are two facets to this confident trust in God. We see the first in verses 7–8, when the psalmist says that the danger will not approach those he’s with, and they will “see the recompense of the wicked.” He has no doubt it will happen because he knows God is powerful and in control.

But there’s something else that happens a little later in the passage that demonstrates another aspect of this trust in God’s faithfulness. In verses 14–16, God begins to speak. He makes a promise:

“He will call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.” (Psalm 91:15)

God’s power and control aren’t the only reasons the psalmist has to trust Him. He can also be confident because God promised to be near.

Now let’s think back to our drooling darling. Why was she able to fall asleep on Daddy’s shoulder? Because she knew her daddy was strong enough not to drop her, and she knew if anything went wrong, he was right there to protect her. When we’re able to trust God like that, the result is exactly what our darling experienced—rest, wrapped up in the peace that comes from intimacy with our Father.

How Can We Build Intimacy with God Through Trust?

We often think that trust is a feeling that comes naturally when another person acts trustworthy. While that can be the case—it’s certainly the truth with our drooling darling—trust can also be a choice we make when it’s challenging. Here are a few ways we can begin developing intimacy with God through trust:

  • Use reminders of God’s sovereignty. If you’re in a season of trial, put a note on your mirror or write a verse somewhere visible that reminds you God is in control.
  • Pray honestly. Talk to God about your trials, frustrations, and fears. It takes trust to show someone your hurting heart.
  • Surrender the stress. When you’re in a wait-and-see situation, identify what feels most precious or uncertain. In prayer, choose to hand it over to God—not because you don’t care, but because you trust Him to do what is best.

Prayer

Lord God, who You are is such a blessing to me. You are faithful and powerful and worthy of my trust. Please forgive me for the ways I’ve failed to put my trust in You. I know from Scripture and my own life that You are trustworthy. Help me trust You more and grow closer to You. Thank You for hearing my prayer.

In Jesus’ name I pray,
Amen.
